Hobart
Australia
Nestled among southern Tasmania’s rolling landscapes and coastal vistas, Hobart offers golfers a truly memorable experience.
7 Mile Beach Golf, a short 5 minute drive from the airport and 15 minutes from the centre of Hobart, is a stunning dune‑style course spearheaded by Tasmanian PGA pro Mathew Goggin, who grew up playing along its windswept shoreline. Goggin collaborated with world‑renowned golf architects Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries (Clayton, DeVries & Pont), blending natural sand dunes and coastal panoramas into a dramatic 18‑hole layout. The course emphasizes both walking access and environmental integration, marking it as Tasmania’s next world‑class golf destination.
A short drive brings you to the Royal Hobart Golf Club, also located at Seven Mile Beach but not laid out in the style of the aforementioned course. This historic course, granted “Royal” status in 1925, spans 6,752 yards with classic parkland-links design. Architect Vern Morcom's layout challenges players with strategic bunkers and gently undulating surfaces. It has hosted amateur championships and improvements are ongoing, including bunker upgrades and turf rejuvenation.
10 minutes further along is one of the more well established courses in the state capital - Tasmania Golf Club, an 18-hole, par‑72 parkland course measuring 6,796 yards. Designed by Al Howard and Ian Grimsey, it features lush fairways, tree-lined holes, and serene lakeside views along the River Derwent. Besides these mainstays, Hobart has a number of other courses including Kingston Beach and Claremont - both worth playing.
