West Coast England

United Kingdom

The west coast of England offers a rich and varied golf experience, blending historic championship links with scenic coastal settings and warm hospitality.

Stretching from the Lake District in the north to Cornwall in the south, this region is home to some of the country’s most storied and scenic courses.

At the top of the list is Royal Birkdale Golf Club, one of the most iconic venues in The Open Championship rota. Known for its towering dunes, pristine conditioning, and fair yet demanding layout, Royal Birkdale has hosted The Open ten times, most recently in 2017 and soon to be in 2026. It is widely considered England’s best championship links course.

Just a short drive away is Hillside Golf Club, often praised for its spectacular back nine and undulating terrain. Though not on The Open rota, it has hosted numerous amateur and professional events, including the British Masters. Hillside is a favourite among tour professionals for its layout and natural setting.

Next door to Hillside is Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club, a two-time Ryder Cup host with rugged links terrain and a rich history. Its dramatic bunkering and classic design make it a memorable test of golf.

Other nearby gems include Formby Golf Club, which offers a blend of woodland and links character, and West Lancashire Golf Club, one of the oldest links courses in England, known for its tough layout and sea views.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club, located in Hoylake on England’s northwest coast, is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the UK. Founded in 1869, it has hosted The Open Championship 13 times, most recently in 2023. The course is a classic links layout, known for its flat terrain, strategic bunkering, and demanding conditions, especially when the wind blows.

While outwardly understated, Royal Liverpool’s subtle challenges and rich history—having hosted legends like Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy—make it a revered venue. It remains a cornerstone of championship golf in the British Isles.

Nearby, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Hillside Golf Club round out a trio of elite venues, all within a short drive of Liverpool.

The west coast’s golf offering is enhanced by its proximity to charming seaside towns, historic pubs, and rugged coastlines. The region also benefits from relatively mild weather, allowing for near year-round play.

What makes the west coast of England special is its blend of world-class championship golf and authentic, off-the-beaten-track experiences. Whether you’re chasing major venues or discovering coastal gems, the west coast provides a rich and rewarding journey through England’s golfing heritage and landscape.
